Reading to the kids is something I've always enjoyed, especially with the little ones. There's something about reading a book so much that you know the words by heart. One of my favorites has always been How the Grinch Stole Christmas. I think every one in the family can recite it.
Here are some of our favorites for younger children:
A Fish Out of Water by Palmer and Eastman
Are You My Mother? by Eastman
Flap Your Wings by Eastman
Flyaway Kite by Bjorkman
Goodnight Moon by Brown and Hurr
Ping by Flack and Wiese
Slinky Malinki, Harry MacClary, and Schnitzel von Krumm (several books are in this series - excellent rhyme and so funny) by Lynley Dodd
Where the Wild Things Are by Sendak
and when they're a little older (grammar stage)
Charlotte's Web by White
Cheaper by the Dozen by Gilbert (you have to edit a bit)
Chronicles of Narnia by Lewis
David Livingstone by Benge
Frog and Toad by Lobel
Hero Tales by Jackson
Little House Series by Wilder
Mr. Popper's Penguins by Atwater
Stuart Little by White
Teddy's Button by LeFeuvre
Trumpet of the Swan by White
Wind in the Willows by Grahame
That's enough for now, but I"m sure I've left out many that I'll see tomorrow and want to add!

Great list! There are a lot on there that we love too! =)
I grew up with the "An I Can Read Book/Weekly Reader" books, and Frog and Toad was one of my favorites as a kid. I still have a lot of my books that I've been able to share with my girls.
Danny and the Dinosaur, Sammy the Seal, Oink and Pearl, the Little Bear books, Hattie Be Quiet, Hattie Be Good, etc...
Authors like Syd Hoff, Kay Chorao, Lillian Hoban, Dick Gackenbach and Else Holmelund Minarik are some favorites of ours. (Like you, I'm sure I'm forgetting a lot.) =)
Oh, another favorite that my kids have enjoyed over the years is "A Porcupine Named Fluffy" by Helen Lester. It's really quite humorous. =)
Thanks for sharing your favorites. I always welcome book suggestions! =)
Thank you for the reading list. We are going to the library once a week and enjoy picking out books, though some of them are edited as we read.
We recently bought Eliana the "Are You My Mother" book at the library for $0.50. (The library is a great place to find used books.)
Your list for older kids brought back memories, especially "Mr. Popper's Penguins." While we were out today I ran across a few other books from the past: "The Island of the Blue Dolphins", "Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of Nimh", and "The Bridge to Terabathia." My fifth grade teacher used to read to us for a little bit after we came in from recess. (The three books I listed were part of the class reading.)
We love to read books! Thanks again for such a great list. As a new mom I value the info.
You do have a good list! We read Mr. Popper's Penguins as a class novel as well as Sarah, Plain, & Tall. In college I received a huge list of children's books and had a whole class on it. It was my favorite because for summer reading we were required to read about 60-70 children's books. I'll have to see if I can't find the list.
